The following is a message from SSAH / Passport Provincial Coalition. For more information, please visit their 2012 Action Campaign page online:
On May 23rd a very successful Family Gathering was held in London, Ontario to share new information about SSAH and Passport funding. The day was sponsored by SSAHPC with the support of Family Alliance Ontario, Individualized Funding Coalition for Ontario (IFCO), Windsor Essex Family Network and London Family Network.
A position paper titled "Social Exclusion: How Government Programs Are Failing Persons with Developmental Disabilities" was developed and presented by Diane Wintermute, a lawyer from ARCH. We were very pleased to collaborate and consult on the work of this position paper. We have worked in partnership with them for previous activities. ARCH Disability Law Centre is a specialty community legal aid clinic dedicated to defending and advancing the equality rights of people with disabilities in Ontario.
Marilyn Dolmage facilitated an advocacy strategy session following the presentation of our new Position Paper. Families AGREED we would lead an ACTION Campaign for all parents/families/friends to take part in.
Families spoke about being very frustrated and highly stressed by the changes MCSS has made to SSAH. In addition, some families present told of languishing on SSAH and Passport wait lists.
Under the name of Transformation the Ministry of Community and Social Services/MCSS government has drastically changed SSAH which has been one of their MOST successful programs. We consider SSAH a first choice program that offers individualized support for our family member.
